What is a Bridesmaid Proposal Box?

A bridesmaid proposal box is a gift box with a letter or card to pop the question to your friends. The question, of course, is, “Will you be my Bridesmaid?”

A proposal box isn’t necessary, but it is a fun way to ask your friends if they’ll join your bridal party. The box itself can be anything from a pre-made, luxury gift box to a thoughtful, DIY present for your bridesmaids and maid of honor.

These boxes can contain anything that you’d like it to. It can be fun items your bridesmaids can use right away or they can be fun, themed items they can use on the wedding day.

What Do You Put in a Bridesmaid Proposal Box?

What you put in your bridesmaid and maid of honor proposal boxes is completely up to you. Typically, proposal gift boxes are filled with small, luxury items like candles, robes, makeup bags, and tumblers. Or you can personalize your boxes and choose items for each friend, like jewelry, makeup, sparkling wine, or snacks.

You can include items your bridesmaids can use on your wedding day, such as themed hair pieces, makeup, or jewelry. You can also add items that they can use right away, such as gift cards, cups, or mini bottles of alcohol.

How Much Should You Spend on a Bridesmaid Proposal Gift Box?

First of all, remember that proposal boxes are optional. And keep in mind that you’ll need to buy thank you gifts later, for your entire bridal party. The amount you spend on your proposal boxes is completely up to you.

Most ready made gift boxes start at $25 and up. If you’ve got a small bridal party, you can splurge and buy a luxury box for each person. If you’ve got a big bridal party, you can save money by creating your own boxes. Or you can offer a small, thoughtful gift and card instead of an entire box.

Where to Buy Bridesmaid Proposal Boxes?

If you’re looking for a ready made proposal box, Etsy has lots of pre-filled gift boxes. They come in every color and style you can think of. Some of the sets can even be personalized with your friends names. If you’d like to make your own DIY bridesmaid proposal boxes, you can buy empty boxes and fill them with small bridesmaid or maid of honor gifts from Etsy or from your local shops.

Bridesmaid Proposal Message Ideas

A bridesmaid proposal box isn’t complete without the perfect bridesmaid proposal message. Every message will vary based on your wedding theme, your relationship with your bridesmaid, and their personality type.

You want to choose a message that fits not only your potential bridesmaid, but you as well. Select a message that fits true to you and conveys your gratitude for their presence. It can be cute, heartfelt, sexy, or a pun. Consider some ideas like these:

  • I donut want to say “I do” without you.

  • Will you help me tie the knot?

  • Lets go, girls!

  • The one where she’s a bridesmaid. Will you be there for me?

  • Ocean air and salty hair. I’m getting married and I need you there.

  • I can’t walk down the isle without your beautiful smile.

  • The best day ever includes you.

  • Ain’t no party like a bridal party.

  • Will you help me say yes to the dress?

  • Obviously you’re going to be my bridesmaid. At least act surprised…

  • Help me keep my sh** together.

  • Let’s rock and roll.

  • I promise I won’t make you wear an ugly dress.

  • I got my ring. But I need one more thing…

  • I found my mister. But I still need my sister!

  • Soon you’ll be my sister. But until then…

  • I don’t know when or where, but I do know I need you there.

  • My wedding would suck without you.

  • This witch is getting hitched!

  • You’re my ride or die.

Talk About Your Expectations

Whether or not you decide to include a letter, you should be ready to talk about what you’ll need from your bridesmaids and your maid of honor. Ensure you’re ready to discuss what they’ll need to buy and how much money they’ll spend.

If your friends haven’t been in a wedding before, they might not understand what they’re saying yes to. If they’re a first-time bridesmaid, they might not know what they’ll be expected to pay for or how much time they’ll need to commit. By letting them know what you’ll ask of them, you can avoid painful surprises late.

Lisa Torres shared a fantastic letter that she wrote for her bridesmaids that included everything they needed to know. If you want an example of what you can include, check out her video here:

Think about how much time and help you’ll want from them, as well. Some brides like to have their bridesmaids help with planning, and some brides don’t. How much support you want from your group is a personal decision. If you put some thought into it ahead of time, you’ll be able to be clear about what you’re asking for.

If you’re planning a DIY wedding, you might need even more help from your bridal party. If you’ll need them to assist with decorating or other projects, remember to discuss them beforehand. Mention it now if you’ll be making favors, creating centerpieces, or setting up on the wedding day itself.

Besides their wedding day role, typical bridesmaid duties include:

  • Moral support for the bride

  • Hosting a bridal shower

  • Attending fittings and buying their dress and shoes

  • Hosting the bachelorette party

  • Attending the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner

Inexpensive Bridesmaid and Maid of Honor Proposal Boxes

If you’re on a super tight budget, you don’t need to buy an entire box. It’s ok to just ask. Say the words out loud and wait for them to answer. Or you can choose a pretty card, so they’ll have a little keepsake from you. A lovely letter from a friend is always meaningful.

Or you can choose just a single gift instead of a whole box. A piece of jewelry, a bottle of wine or a small, cute gift is enough for a nice bridesmaid proposal.

If you want to choose different or more personal gifts for your friends, you can make your own bridesmaid and maid of honor proposal boxes. Making your own gift boxes is also a great way to save money.

Most gift boxes are created with one main “wow” gift. Something luxurious or unique, like a handmade candle or a personalized makeup bag. Then, the rest of the box can be filled out with smaller items, like lip balm, notebooks, or scrunchies.
