Blast From The Past: The Ultimate Y2K Bachelorette Party Guide

It’s the 2000s. You’re bedazzling a pair of jeans in your room that’s covered in Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears posters. Life is good. We’re going back to the Y2K. Y2K for some of us who may not know stands for the Year 2000. We’re going to kick back, pump up the jams and head for a Y2K Bachelorette Party!

We need a CD wall, some vibrantly colored drinks and a bucket hat. So as Destiny Child once said “sit back and let me pour out my love letter”, that is to the Y2K.

Why a Y2K Theme for Your Bachelorette Party?

Why, you may ask, would you do a Y2K theme for a bachelorette party? Well… mainly because you can. Those of us who were teens in the early 2000s are getting married, and it’s a great way to let loose and get nostalgic.

Plus, for some unknown reason, many of the fashion trends from that time are returning, so now is the time to buy another crinkle popcorn shirt! The early 2000s were about pop culture, celebrities, MTV, CDs, and bold colors. The immense levels of nostalgic kitsch and deep celebrity MTV pop culture may be a lot, so try to focus on narrowing down your theme.

Breaking down some of the themes will really help everything look more cohesive than it did in the actual year 2000. Your theme could focus on the music, movies, fashion, celebrities, MTV, bold colors, or nostalgia. So if you have a music theme, hang up an iridescent CD wall, throw down a red carpet, and we highly recommend a denim on denim outfit.

Nostalgia could have everyone in neon yellow and pink with friendship bracelets and Tamagotchis as party favors. There are so many things you can do with this theme, and that is why it's so fetch.

Preparing for a Y2K Bash: Invitations and Planning

It’s super important to plan way ahead for these events. Everyone in your party needs time to plan to be available, get their outfits planned and ordered, and so you’re not rushing around either. Start with some amazing invitations that highlight the major points of your theme, the details and send them out ASAP!

Y2K Fashion Guide for the Bride and Crew

Whoever came up with “flared leggings” is as disturbed as those who say orange is the new pink. We are talking big pants, small tops, velour tracksuits, and fashion trends of the early 2000s.

A Y2K party is incomplete without some seriously questionable fashion choices, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was being Punk’d by seeing some of them returning lately. Yoga pants, bucket hats, and a lot of chunky bracelets are making a comeback, but to really get into the authentic fashion, let us show you how yoga pants walked so flare leggings could run.

Taking fashion one step further is so 2002, and this is how you do it, with crimped hair, blue eyeshadow, and plenty of butterfly hairclips. You can channel your inner celebrity, and you don’t need to show up in a bright red leather jumpsuit to do it, but you could. Frosted tips, cargo pants, jelly shoes, and trucker hats can always make an appearance.

If you genuinely need inspiration, look to the blockbuster movies like Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, or She’s the Man for the perfect recognizable inspiration. It’s the perfect excuse for a nostalgic movie marathon with a gouda cheese board. And don’t forget more is more.

Where to Host a Y2K Bachelorette Party?

Whether you’re hosting this at your crib or going out for a night on the town, you should try to have a dedicated space where everyone can convene, and you can decorate a little, change into your fetch fits, and go out as a group.

Hosting it at someone’s home is a great way to go for the MTV Cribs theme. Each space can be decorated with cute MTV Crib sayings and the classic checkerboard decor. If you want to have a night out on the town, we suggest finding a cool retro arcade bar or somewhere that is blinged out and full of color.

If you want to get away with your girls for a few days, there’s only one place to go. The home of Beverly Hills and Palm Springs, we’re talking California. Taking a few days with your friends to go to the heart of it all and go wild with the nostalgic Y2K festivities will give you a weekend to remember.

You can visit iconic places, bedazzle denim jackets, have an airbrush party, and even have a movie marathon. Whatever you decide, make it for you and your friends to have the most fantastic time. Cheetahs for life.

Ultimate Y2K Playlist

Obviously when planning a throwback bachelorette party you can’t be a good host without a rumpshaking both ways mixtape. The best Y2K party we’ve seen included a nonstop MTV music video top charts on the side of a building.

It was the most memorable way to get a party started and was the largest decor we’ve ever seen. Whether you curate your own mixtape, have a sick DJ or project the entire top charts on the side of the building you need to really throw in some slow jams for a breather.

Y2K Party Favors to Remember

Friends who make bracelets together, stay together and that’s why you can use a lot of your party activities for your favors. If you want to start the weekend by giving your girls some goodies they can use throughout the weekend.

Accessories are a girl's best friend and while you can bedazzle clothes and make bracelets you can fill a goody bag with some iconic, if questionable accessories. Custom temporary tattoos and lip gloss are our favorites because they will be special and just for your party.

But trust us when we already amassed a list of inspiration for you. Slap Bracelets, Butterfly clips, Rimless glasses, choker necklaces, butterfly necklaces and butterfly anything really are just the tip of the iceberg.

Capturing the Memories

The worst thing about these events that we meticulously research, plan, and bring to light is that they end. You want to find a way to capture these memories, and you can even make that experience unique too.

Having a real photo booth at your party is the most, which is what the 2000s were all about. They’re a fun way to bring your party to life, and you’ll leave your friends with remarkable experiences and party favors. Passing out disposable cameras to your crew is a great option too.

Especially for long weekend getaways, you can have the photos developed on your last day and look back on the fun you had. You can pick out your favorites and even have copies made before you head home. Another adorable option is to splurge for a Polaroid camera. They’re especially fancy now, and we love the formatting that the photos come out in.

Having a bachelorette party is a time for you to get with your girls and make memories, play games and dance like nobody's watching. It doesn’t matter if it’s a weekend getaway or a movie marathon at home, it’s about celebrating the bride to be and sending her off with a bang. XoXo, Gossip Girl.
