What Is a Cenote?
Cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula are sinkholes, where the limestone surface collapsed and opened to freshwater rivers below ground. Some cenotes are open air swimming holes and some are in underground caverns.
Mayans once worshipped the cenote as an entrance to the underworld. On a more practical level, cenotes also provided fresh water for the Mayans.
Lots of day trips include stops at a cenote, so you’ll have a chance to swim in a natural jungle setting. The cenotes are a great place to cool off after an ATV ride or a hike around Mayan ruins, so remember to bring your bathing suits.

Personal pictures! When we booked our ATV excursion, we were going to share one. But I get bored pretty easily. So we booked two - one for each of us. It turns out, they’re pretty easy to drive.
On our tour, we mostly drove along dirt paths in the jungle. There were one or two rocky spots, but the leader helped anyone who needed it. I never had so much fun in my entire life! 10/10 highly recommend booking two ATVS.
