Destination Wedding Venues in Jamaica: Locations, Pricing, Planning Tips, and More

For most, a scenic wedding in a breathtaking land is a dream come true. The salty air, the dreamy views, and the romantic getaway are all a part of the experience of a tropical destination wedding.

Jamaica is a destination wedding hotspot; most soon-to-be couples are happy to call their “I do” location. With sprawling lands of ocean and intimate waterfalls and mountains, Jamaica paints a beautiful picture.

This island hosts dozens of different kinds of resorts at reasonably affordable prices, offering services to nearly all budgets and wedding types.

But with so many locations and types of wedding venues in Jamaica, it’s not always clear which venue is right for you and your partner.

Luckily, we’ve crafted this ultimate guide on wedding venues in Jamaica, offering the best venues in every category and location, cost breakdowns for a wedding in Jamaica, tips for planning a destination wedding, and more.

Why Choose Jamaica for Your Wedding?

Jamaica is a combination of so many good things: affordable, naturally beautiful, warm, uniquely charming, and intimate.

  • It’s Intimate - Unlike Cancun or other party hotspots, Jamaica is quieter and more intimate. That’s not to say that you can’t find a good nightclub or party on the island, but it has its own place amongst visitors and residents. This element is perfect for those who want to carve out some club time in their schedules but don’t plan to make it a main priority throughout their wedding festivities.

  • Versatile Landscape - Jamaica is also extremely versatile. Although the island isn’t huge, you can find so many different elements of nature throughout the land; beaches, waterfalls, mountains, rainforests, and caves are just some of the natural scenery you will come across during your visit. Therefore, there are also many scenery options when choosing a wedding venue location or the perfect spot for a fun group day before the ceremony. Most larger countries can’t offer such a variety of scenery.

  • Year-Round Sunshine - The weather is also a highlight of the island’s offerings. Unlike most regions or countries, Jamaica has consistently warm weather year-round, so no need to worry about booking during a cold month. The island offers a picturesque tropical scene nearly all year of 70s - high 80s temperatures - a welcomed reprieve from some of the cold winter conditions most of us experience for the better part of half the year.

  • Jamaica Is Affordable - Jamaica may seem like a top-dollar location, but it’s actually really affordable! U.S. News named Jamaica the number one best cheap destination wedding location, and for good reason. The average wedding package on the island, excluding airfare and other extras, comes in just under $2,000. Yes, only $2,000! This allows couples with all different kinds of budgets to enjoy a dreamy wedding experience.

  • It’s a Short Trip for Most - Unlike a trip to Italy or Japan, nearly all Americans can reach an airport in Jamaica in under 6 hours. For those in Florida, it’s a quick two-hour trip. Those further North in Chicago can expect a five-hour flight, roughly. Most airlines designate flights to Jamaica as direct trips, so you shouldn’t have to worry about layovers. This leaves more time for wedding festivities and fun!

  • The Residents Are Kind and Welcoming - The residents of Jamaica are kind and welcoming to all, offering a friendly and positive atmosphere to you and your guests alike. Residents treat visitors and tourists with respect and hospitality, which will create a beautiful environment for your wedding day.

  • It’s Full of Unique Charm - Jamaica offers a unique charm you won’t find anywhere else! It’s peaceful, tropical, full of music and rhythm, has unique foods and cuisines, and everyone is welcome. It’s a great environment for groups to relax, celebrate, or just get some sun.

What to Look for in a Jamaican Wedding Venue

a scenic ocean view with a resort and a pool

  1. Cost - Although most wedding venues in Jamaica are pretty affordable, it’s always crucial to make sure the venue fits your budget. Allow room in your budget for any extras the property may not cover, such as decorations, alcohol, or a wedding cake.

  2. A Fitting Wedding Package Type - In your search for a wedding venue in Jamaica, look into the wedding packages each location offers. Most venues have a few different tiered packages that cover different aspects of the wedding. Choose a package that covers things the most expensive things that are essential to you and your ceremony. You can always purchase the smaller things separately (and probably at a cheaper price), so you don’t necessarily find one that has everything you want.

  3. Scenery That Fits Your Wedding Theme - Most venues offer scenic views as a background or atmosphere for your wedding. As mentioned previously, Jamaica has various types of landscapes, so pick a region or venue location that offers a similar vibe to your wedding theme. If you’re planning a tropical beach wedding, choose a venue on the ocean. Creating a mysterious jungle scene? Look for a venue closer to the rainforest. Seeking a ceremony amongst nature? Look for a venue near waterfalls or caves.

  4. Proper Guest Accommodations - If you plan to have several guests, it’s important to choose a venue or adjacent hotel that can not only accommodate your wedding needs but your guests as well. If your guests have to stay in a separate hotel from you or there’s not enough room for everyone at the ceremony, it can create chaos and confusion when you need to meet up for wedding planning or make guests uncomfortable during the wedding festivities.

Tips for How to Plan a Destination Wedding in Jamaica

Beach wedding with guests sitting in chairs and the minister at the altar.

Wedding ceremony at a tropical beach in Jamaica.

1. Set Your Budget

A Jamaica destination wedding can be very affordable. If you set your budget ahead of time, you can make choices that’ll fit your wedding budget. If you’ve got a big budget, you can look at luxury resorts like Sandals Montego Bay or Negril. If you’ve got a smaller wedding budget, look at less expensive resorts, like Iberostar Rose Hall or Grand Bahia Principe.

The great thing about Jamaica is that even with a small budget, you can have a fantastic wedding. Even the most affordable resorts have beautiful beaches, nice rooms, and delicious food.

When you set the budget, remember to include traveling to your wedding destination, your hotel stay, and your wedding package, plus a few extra things, like your wedding dress, suit, and wedding rings.

2. Choose Your Resort

When you choose your resort, you’ll need to consider your own, as well as your guests, budgets. Typically, each person pays for their own travel. But if you know your most important guests are on a tight budget, you’ll probably want to choose an affordable hotel.

3. Decide If You’ll Have a Symbolic Ceremony or a Legal Ceremony in Jamaica

  • If you decide to get legally married in Jamaica, it’ll be recognized by the U.S. or Canada. If you fill out the paperwork and have a legal ceremony performed, you’ll be married the same as if you’d done it at home.

  • The only drawback is the extra paperwork. You’ll need to complete and sign it ahead of time, then have it sent by courier in order to get a marriage license. After the wedding, you’ll get your marriage certificate in the mail about 3 months later.

  • There’ll be some extra costs for application fees. And you’ll need to check your wedding package. Most packages include a symbolic ceremony. There might be extra costs for a legal ceremony and officiant.

  • Many couples decide to get married at home ahead of time. That way, you can avoid the extra work and expense. You can go to city hall before you leave for your destination and get legally married at home. Then, at your destination, you can plan a meaningful ceremony for your beach wedding.

If you decide to get legally married in Jamaica, you’ll need:

  • Your passport as proof of citizenship

  • Certificate of divorce, if either of you is divorced

  • Certified copy of death certificate, if either of you is widowed

  • If your documents aren’t in English, they need to be translated and notarized ahead of time

  • Legally you need to arrive 24 hours ahead of your ceremony. But most resorts will require you to arrive 3 days ahead, in time to sort out all the details.

4. Choose a Package For Your Jamaica Wedding

Once you book your flights and hotel, you can book a wedding package. Every wedding package comes with a dedicated, on site wedding planner. They’ll book your wedding date and package for you. On your wedding day, they’ll be there to make sure everything goes perfectly.

Usually, a resort offers packages at three price levels. Each one is for a certain number of guests. The basic packages are for weddings up to 10 people. Medium packages are for weddings with 20 to 30 people.

Luxury packages are for weddings with 30 or more guests. All the packages will include a symbolic ceremony plus decorations, chairs, cake and sparkling wine.

Different resorts will include different extras in each package. Typically bigger packages will have upgraded flowers, cakes and meals. Other packages might include a cocktail hour or a private dinner. Sometimes packages will include extra services, like hair and makeup or photography.

Visit the website for a few of your favorite resorts and see what’s included in each package. If you’re planning a small, simple wedding a basic package will be perfect for you. If you want a more luxurious wedding, most resorts offer upgraded packages and optional extras.

Do You Need to Hire a Wedding Planner For a Jamaican Wedding?

Hiring a wedding planner is a great idea if you’ve got the budget, but first you should decide if you really need one or not. Most couples plan and book their wedding at the same resort they’re staying at with their guests.

If You’re Planning at an All Inclusive Resort

Every wedding package at an all inclusive resort comes with a dedicated, on site wedding planner. You don’t need to hire a separate planner. After you’ve booked your trip, you’ll book your wedding package directly with the resort planner. They’ll take care of reserving your date, booking your ceremony and reception, plus any extras you order.

Some travel agents will include booking your wedding date for you. Some agents will let you contact the resort yourself. Either way, the final decision is always made by the on site, resort wedding planner.

If You’re Planning an Off-Site Wedding:

Besides the resorts, Jamaica has private wedding venues, including hotels with a garden or gazebo where you can get married. If you choose a spot that doesn’t have an on site wedding coordinator, you’ll probably want to hire a local wedding planner. A local planner knows the best wedding venues and they can make sure you’ve got reliable vendors. They can check on your wedding venue and make sure everything stays on track. On your wedding day, they’ll be there to organize, from start to finish and make sure everything is perfect for your wedding ceremony and reception.

Hiring a Local Wedding Planner

The cost of hiring a wedding planner will vary, depending on how they charge. Some wedding planners will co-ordinate your entire day for a flat fee. Other planners will charge a percentage of your wedding budget.

When you’re looking for a planner, remember to check their online reviews. Try to book a video call, as well. Your planner is going to be communicating with you, and for you, in all the months leading to your wedding. As well, this person is going to be by your side on one of the most important days of your life. If you can speak to them before you hire them, you can make sure you’ll get along and enjoy the process along the way.

If you decide to hire a wedding planner, start by deciding how many services you’ll need. Do you need your planner to:

  • Help you choose a wedding venue

  • Find and book vendors

  • Plan your wedding ceremony

  • Help with your marriage license

  • Coordinate your rehearsal

  • Plan a rehearsal dinner

  • Set your reception timeline

  • Meet vendors and accept deliveries

  • Coordinate your wedding reception

  • Plan any welcome parties or excursions

Best Time to Book Your Wedding in Jamaica

When you’re deciding on your trip dates, think about crowds and prices. School holidays, like Christmas and Spring Break are the most popular time to travel to all destinations. Travel and hotel costs are usually highest during these weeks. Resorts will be fully booked and you might even have trouble getting enough rooms if you don’t book far enough in advance.

High season in Jamaica is in the winter months - from December to April. Lots of travelers want to book a winter getaway. Costs are the highest and most resorts get fully booked. If you want to book your Jamaican wedding during high season, make sure you book early. Book a room block for your guests and make sure they get their deposits in on time.

You can usually find fewer crowds and better bargains if you book during the off season. The weather might not be as perfect, but it’s usually great. And you can get fantastic deals at different times of the year. You’ll find the best compromise for your budget vs. weather in May and June or October and November. If you want rock bottom rates, you can usually find the cheapest trips in July and August.
